Just moved to Raleigh?

The City of Oaks — North Carolina's capital and by far the biggest of the three.

Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and home to NC State University. It's the largest of the three cities by a wide margin, with its own downtown warehouse district, museums clustered around Bicentennial Plaza, and a ring of suburbs (Cary, Apex, Wake Forest) that are really their own towns but read as "Raleigh" from a distance.

Worth knowing: Raleigh is the "City of Oaks" because its early planners laid streets around the oak trees already growing there instead of clearing them. (source)

Worth knowing: Pullen Park opened in 1887 and is the fifth-oldest operating amusement park in the U.S., with a hand-carved Dentzel carousel built around 1900. (source)

🧳 Utilities & everyday essentials

Start with your street address. A mailing address alone may not tell you which government or utility serves your home.

🚌 Buses, traffic & the airport

Plan the whole trip, including the ride home. Regional and local buses have separate routes, schedules, and fare policies.

📚 Schools & libraries

Use the school district’s address lookup before making enrollment plans. For libraries, check the card policy for the system you want to use.

🌳 Parks, trails & gardens

Pick an entrance before you set out. Trail conditions, parking, accessibility, and pet rules vary by location.

🔬 Museums & family outings

A rainy afternoon needs a backup plan. Check admission, reservations, and any extra charges before promising the kids a train ride.

🎭 Events, music & local culture

Use the Brief’s calendar for a curated starting point, then the organizer’s page for the final details.

🥕 Farmers markets

Bring a bag and check the season’s hours. Market days and vendor lineups can change.
