Pittsboro is small, and its layout tells you where the center is: the 1881 Chatham County courthouse sits inside a traffic circle that everything else arranges itself around. The building has been on the National Register since 1979; the circle came later, around 1947. Jordan Lake is a short drive east, Chapel Hill is about twenty minutes north, and county services — schools, libraries, permits — run through Chatham County rather than Orange or Wake.
