Riverside High's 14 Lockdowns

⚡ Quick Hits

  • 🚨 The FBI is helping Durham Public Schools trace the anonymous tips behind 14 Riverside High lockdowns.
  • 🗳️ More than half a million North Carolinians had voted early by Saturday.
  • 🦕 Durham County residents get into the Museum of Life and Science free on Tuesday.

First Up

Riverside High School has gone into lockdown 14 times since last July, three of them last week alone, and anonymous tips have been setting them off. The FBI is now working with Durham Public Schools to find the sender, whose tips appear to come from one consistent IP address, and Superintendent Anthony Lewis says that person could face up to 20 felony charges. A lockdown can run 45 minutes, and only police can lift it, so the principal is adding a daily period for students to catch up on missed work.

  • Two tax amendments are on that ballot: one caps the state income tax rate at 3.5% (it's 3.99% now), and the other requires lawmakers to limit local property tax increases. (The Assembly)

Before You Go

The Carolina Theatre's possible ghosts include a little boy in what looks like a vintage usher's uniform, spotted in Fletcher Hall's second balcony, and a wind-up Victrola outside the third-floor donor lounge that seemed to start playing on its own. The volunteer Ghost Guild started its two-year study in April, and its director, a self-described skeptic, says they're collecting data, not evidence.

🧠 Brain break: today's Daily Fury is live along with the NC State Fair Hub. Five questions, the same five for everyone. Defend the Triangle's honor.
