  • 🌡️ Highs near 90 on Wednesday give way to possible frost Saturday night.

First Up

At least six tornadoes touched down around the Triangle Sunday afternoon as Isaias's leftovers brought winds from 65 to 110 mph. In northeast Raleigh's Neuse Crossing and Massey Preserve neighborhoods, the storms tore roofs and siding off homes and flipped cars. Glad to hear that nobody was reported hurt. If you're cleaning up, the city is collecting storm debris for free; just keep yard waste separate from everything else.

📰 Around the Triangle

  • A hot week, then a cold snap: highs climb toward 90 on Wednesday, and Friday could beat the date's record of 86 before a cold front arrives that evening. Saturday stays in the 60s, with frost possible Saturday night. (ABC11)
  • I-40 closes overnight at Old N.C. 86 through Thursday: both directions shut from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for bridge joint repairs, with traffic detoured off at Exit 261 and back on. (Chapelboro)
  • The Ackland has its lead gift for a $70 million expansion: the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust committed $20 million toward it — a 40,000-square-foot project that would roughly double the museum and link it to Hanes Art Center, Kenan Music, and Memorial Hall. (Chapelboro)
  • RDU had two ground stops Monday: a fiber-optic line cut during a nearby plumbing repair grounded flights for about 20 minutes late that morning, and an equipment outage stopped them again from 6:45 to 8 p.m. Delays were still rippling through Tuesday. (WRAL)
  • Two Central North Carolina adults have died of West Nile virus this year: the CDC counts 11 more cases in the state. With a warm week ahead, the advice is repellent and long sleeves, especially from dusk to dawn. (WRAL)
  • Holiday Express tickets go on sale Thursday at 9 a.m.: Ticketmaster only, $21 plus tax and fees, eight per household. The Pullen Park train runs Dec. 1 through 17. (City of Raleigh)
  • Raleigh asked teenagers about a youth curfew: council members took notes at tables of teens at the Five Points Center for Active Adults, after gatherings over the Fourth of July weekend left nine people hurt in three shootings. (WRAL)

Before You Go

On a 2008 flight, UNC oncologist Ned Sharpless was watching Battlestar Galactica when he noticed the show's particle beams wrecked bone marrow the way chemotherapy does. He wondered whether a drug could shield those cells, and that question became trilaciclib, a cancer drug sold as Cosela. The INDY tells the rest, including how a GlaxoSmithKline layoff in RTP handed the startup its first scientist.

🧠 Brain break: today's Daily Fury is live. Five questions, the same five for everyone. Defend the Triangle's honor.
