First Up
Durham firefighter Andrew Brokes, 24, died Thursday searching for people inside a burning building on Marly Drive when part of the roof gave way. He joined Durham Fire in May 2025 after starting out with the Elon and Swepsonville departments, and flags across North Carolina flew at half-staff Friday. Fourteen people lost their homes in the fire, and one resident's daughter told WRAL that Brokes saved her father's life.
