Dolly Parton died Tuesday at 80. I'll always remember her for mailing free books to children (starting in her home county), and North Carolina became the first state outside Tennessee to take the program statewide. Twenty-one million books later, there are Triangle kids in middle school right now whose first one arrived in the mailbox with her name on it, and it was usually The Little Engine That Could.
